Is this a red government going green? Ultrathin plastic bags are becoming a thing of the past in China. Production of the bags has seized and shops are no longer allowed to hand them out for free. Beijing’s trying to clean up as it gears up for the Olympic summer games. Authorities want to curb pollution and save resources. The Chinese go through 3 billion of these carriers each day.
I think it’s the right thing to do. It’s to save the environment.
It’s not really helping the environment if you can still buy plastic bags. If we really want to protect the environment, we should outlaw them completely.
Environmental groups are praising the regulation which goes further than developed nations like the US or Britain.
But every war has its victims. This is all there’s left at what used to be China’s largest plastic manufacturer. The Huajin Plastic Bag Factory closes its doors just weeks after the ban was announced in January. Overnight, 20,000 workers lost their livelihoods. And that’s China’s development dilemma: who pays the price of progresses.
