Let's see the recent MG Rover deals from my memory (correct me if i am wrong):
1. BMW stripped MG Rover to tow parts: Land Rover (路虎) SUV and MG Rover (sedan), and put them on the block for sale after years of bleeding.
2. Ford bought Land Rover in 1999 for $3billion under then CEO Jac Naser.
3. No body wanted the MG Rover car division, so BMW said it would dump the MG car operation for ONE British Pound (about $2), Yes, 一英镑!
4. A private equity group (mainly MG exectives) got the company for one pound. Talking about fixer-upper!
5. The group dressed up the company and put them back on the block.
6. Now you will like this...
Shanghai Auto bought the latest MG Rover design, not the assets, the motivation unknown, i guess Shanghai wanted to wait out until no body wanted the assets and buy them at garage sale price, maybe, just maybe.
I guess Shanghai never thought 半路杀出个程咬金. Nanjin bought the assets including the plant. So now both companies want to make vehicles under MG Rover brand. Shanghai announced earlier this year that it will build Rover (罗浮) cars by the end of this year and hired several Detroit seaturtles to Shanghai.
To counter Shanghai's efforts, Nanjin wanted to build the car in US......
